LOTUS
is a group for Adult Children of Immigrants:
- Interested in self-reflection, political analysis, and dialogue on generation patterns
- Interested in a weekly therapeutic setting
- Seeking mental health support in a group environment sensitive to the diversity in their cultural and migratory history.
There are few origins to this group name. It holds a personal meaning. The Lotus flower carries rich cultural meaning for me and many others. It also echoes the reality of immigration in the United States. There are a lot of us.
The United States is home to the largest population of immigrants. We are also operating in a defunct immigration system that is expensive and punishing. There are realities of growing up as an immigrant in the United States and growing up as a child of immigrants that ‘rhyme’ in important ways. This group will serve as an incubator of solutions analysis while also centering the emotional wellness, relationships and power dynamics in each members’ lives.
In Illinois, one in seven adults have at least one immigrant parent. The community level data suggests we’re bound by our ethnicities, history and geography. In our day to day lives, our interactions are profoundly more than those shared identities. It is how we change. It how we show up for one another. It is about the parallel financial and political dynamics in our lives. In group, these themes may arise as we talk about emotions, family and experiences- traumatic, inspiring or in between.
The group schedule and time will be determined soon. Please share your interest to keep updated about the details. It will meet weekly with seasonal breaks.
Each group that gathers develops a unique fingerprint. Additionally, I intend to facilitate and co-facilitate the group from a trauma-informed, structurally analytical and culturally humble practice. This group requires an intake appointment to assess fit.
